With funding from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute the Science for Life Program has a mission "to strengthen and transform undergraduate research and interdisciplinary laboratory education in the life sciences" at the University of Florida and our partner institutions. Administered through the UF Honors Program and Office of the Provost, SFL will enhance early undergraduate research, faculty recognition and opportunities, and transform laboratory teaching in the life sciences.

Distinguished Mentor Award
The HHMI Science for Life Distinguished Mentor (DM) Award acknowledges faculty engagement with outstanding undergraduates. The mentorship will be for a two year term starting the semester after the competition. In addition to the title, DM faculty will receive $5,000 per year to be spent at their discretion. All tenured and tenure track faculty at the University of Florida, Louisiana State University, and Morehouse College are eligible to apply DM awardees must be willing to mentor students in their institution's HHMI program and must have active research programs that allow for appropriate research costs and infrastructure to support activities commensurate with their research. DM awardees will serve on committees and must be willing to participate in student recognition events and public presentations of their work as their schedule allows.
